Karly Simon-Sapp, 50, of Plumsted Township, pleaded guilty to theft on Monday, May 13, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release on Thursday, May 23. She was a bookkeeper for the New Jersey Apartment Association (NJAA), which said on its website that it represents "all facets of the multifamily housing industry" in the Garden State.
Investigators said Simon-Sapp forged the signatures of the NJAA's president and vice president on more than 100 checks between January 2016 and January 2022. She cashed the checks for herself, putting $357,250 into her personal bank account.
Simon-Sapp was arrested at her home on Monday, July 10, 2023. Prosecutors said they're seeking five years in state prison for Simon-Sapp and she would have to pay back the $357,250.
Simon-Sapp's sentencing was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20.
